Byalakuppe

The Tibetan Buddhist community in Bylakuppe traces its origins to the 1959 Tibetan uprising against Chinese rule, when Tibetan refugees, fleeing persecution, sought sanctuary in India under the guidance of the Dalai Lama. Bylakuppe, established in the 1960s is one of the largest Tibetan settlements outside Tibet. It is a sanctuary that today, houses monasteries, schools, and residential areas, all dedicated to preserving Tibetan culture and spirituality. However, the journey has not been without its challenges. The community has had to navigate the delicate balance between cultural preservation and integration. Yet, as a result of India's supportive stance toward Tibetan refugees, they thrive through education, agriculture, and tourism.
