Tharangambadi also known as Tranquebar, is a coastal town in the Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu. It is famous for its history as a former Danish colony, which was established in the region in 1620. The Danish

East India Company aimed to secure a foothold in the valuable spice trade and constructed Fort Dansborg in the early 17th century to safeguard their interests. Fort Dansborg played a pivotal role as a fort and administrative center during Danish colonial rule, and it remains a prominent landmark. Tranquebar gained recognition for its printing industry, particularly in 1712, when a Danish missionary established the first Protestant printing press in Asia. This press played a crucial role in disseminating Christian literature and Tamil translations and left a lasting impact. However, Tranquebar experienced a decline in the 18th and 19th centuries due to increased competition, changing trade dynamics, and political challenges. In 1845, Tranquebar was relinquished to British rule, marking a shift in its colonial status.
